
The history of Christian spirituality is rather like a roller coaster, with continual ups and downs: renewal is followed by decline, as the human spirit inevitably falters and falls despite best efforts. It was not just Irish monks who, when they had attained what is called spiritual paternity, were sent out to convert the world; it was Benedictine monks, too, at least in the beginning.
