John Carpay:
Devyn Cousineau is a very woke panelist of the BC Human Rights Tribunal, empowered by law to punish people who disagree with transgender ideology. In February 2026, she ordered former Chilliwack school board trustee Barry Neufeld to pay $750,000 to some gay teachers. In September 2026, Cousineau ordered Dr. Henry Ajaero to pay $20,000 to “Child Q” for refusing to inject this teenager with puberty blockers.
Barry Neufeld disagreed with promoting transgender ideology to children, was elected to the Chilliwack school board on that platform, and faithfully represented his constituents by speaking up for science and sanity. For this, he was deemed to be a human rights violator by Cousineau, who ordered Neufeld to pay $750,000 to people who supposedly felt hurt by his speech.
An immigrant from Nigeria, Dr. Henry Ajaero practices family medicine in Delta, B.C. He and his family are devout, church-going Christians. Ajaero is uncomfortable with gender re-assignment therapy due to his religious beliefs.
Child Q was a young teenage boy who felt deeply unhappy with his male body. Child Q wanted to have a woman’s body, and stop his male puberty from taking its course. In 2021, when Child Q was 14, the BC Gender Clinic prescribed puberty blockers to stop Child Q from developing into a man. The puberty blockers are taken as an injection every three to four weeks. The injection was simple enough that Q could have done it himself, but he preferred to have it done by a medical professional. Ajaero was the family doctor for the Q family. Disagreeing with transgender ideology, he refused to administer the injection. Child Q went elsewhere and received the injection later that same day, and then filed a human rights complaint against Ajaero.
Cousineau declares that “differences in opinion can arise when doctors, exercising their best medical judgment, decide upon the best course of treatment.” She cites from precedent to assert that “The question of the standard of medical care when a doctor is exercising her or his best medical judgment is not an issue for the Tribunal to decide.” Cousineau claims to agree with Ajaero that “it is not this Tribunal’s role to direct the practice of medicine.” However, a doctor’s clinical judgment is worthless in a “human rights” hearing chaired by a believer in transgender ideology, when she sees the “discrimination” bogeyman.
In her ruling, Cousineau writes that Ajaero could have injected the teenager and still practiced medicine “consistently with his religious beliefs,” because the injection by itself “is not medication for gender reassignment.” This is hair-splitting, because puberty blockers are an integral part of the same futile journey of trying to become a member of the opposite sex. Prescribing puberty blockers is similar to surgically removing healthy body parts, because both are rebellions against nature. They differ in degree, not in kind.
Cousineau relied on the “expert” evidence of UBC professor Elizabeth Saewyc. She firmly believes that “the debate about appropriate gender-affirming care for adolescents” is closed. Cousineau ordered Ajaero to pay $8,100 for the costs of Saewyc’s testimony, in addition to the $20,000 that he must pay to Child Q.
Well-meaning people may disagree about the best way to help a young man who wants to become a woman. Some advocate for puberty blockers, estrogen, and eventually surgery to create what might resemble a female body. Others advocate for counselling and psychotherapy to help this young man accept the reality of his biological sex. True science is never settled. Real scientists seek to refute what they believe to be incorrect. But for “experts” like Saewyc and ideologues like Cousineau, there is no need for scientific debate about the best way to help a victim of gender dysphoria. Instead, Cousineau and Saewyc prefer using state power to punish “heretics” like Barry Neufeld and Dr. Ajaero.
Ultimately, Cousineau is not to blame for these injustices. The real culprit is BC’s Human Rights Code, which empowers woke lawyers to use taxpayer-funded machinery to harm people like Neufeld and Ajaero. This legislation can be repealed or improved when B.C. voters elect MLAs who are committed to doing so.
