“As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, we are called to intensify our prayers so that the elections may be free, fair, credible and peaceful.” The Nigerian Bishops made the appeal as they announced a national prayer and fasting program ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The program, themed ‘Let Justice and Peace Flow’, was announced on 19 October in a statement signed by Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso of Kaduna, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria , and Bishop Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta, the Conference’s Secretary.
In their statement, the Bishops urge the faithful to pray for peaceful and fair elections, free from violence, rigging, vote-buying and ethno-religious divisions.
The program includes three main events.
Saturday, 31 October, and Saturday, 28 November 2026: National days of prayer and fasting at parish level. Activities will include fasting until noon or 6 p.m., depending on participants’ health, the Rosary procession, Holy Mass and the recitation of the CBCN prayer for the 2027 elections.
Tuesday, 8 December 2026 – the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary: a nationwide diocesan day of prayer. In every diocese, Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m., presided over by the Bishop, during which a pastoral letter dedicated to the elections will be read. The celebration will be followed by a Rosary procession and Eucharistic Benediction.
Friday, 15 January 2027: On the eve of the presidential and parliamentary elections, a nationwide parish day of prayer and fasting.
