AFRICA/CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC – Appointment of the new Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Vatican City – Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization , appointed His Exc. Msgr. Juan José Aguirre Muñoz, M.C.C.J., as Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Central African Republic on August 10, 2026, for a five-year term .
The second Bishop of Bangassou, 72, , with 46 years of priestly ministry and 28 years as a Bishop , was appointed Coadjutor Bishop in 1997 and received episcopal ordination in 1998. He succeeded to the See in 2000.
On 24 June 2026, the Holy Father accepted his resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Bangassou . He was succeeded by His Excellency Bishop Aurelio Gazzera, O.C.D., previously Coadjutor Bishop of the same See.
