Quelimane – Just over three months have passed since the violent death of Osório Citora Afonso, Bishop of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of the Extraordinary Plenary Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique , held from 2 to 4 September at the St Augustine Interdiocesan Major Philosophical Seminary in Matola, in the Archdiocese of Maputo, the bishops called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding their confrere’s death and those responsible for his murder, which took place at his residence in Quelimane .
The CEM expressed deep sorrow and concern over the killing and raised questions about who murdered Bishop Osório and what motives lay behind the crime. The bishops therefore appealed to the judicial authorities to continue their investigations until the truth is established.
For the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, shedding full light on what happened and ensuring justice are necessary steps on the path towards reconciliation and the renewal of the country.
