Reading and Education

Frank J. Sheed (1897-1981) was one of the leaders in the Catholic literary revival of the first half of the twentieth century—a translator, author and publisher. Born in Sydney, Australia he won many awards and scholarships in both literature and jurisprudence. For a number of years he was the head of the Catholic Evidence Guild, both in London and in Sydney. He and his wife, Maisie Ward, founded the the well-known Catholic publishing house of Sheed and Ward, promoting the works of Karl Adam, Hilaire Belloc, G. K. Chesterton, Christopher Dawson, Ida Friedricke Görres, Ronald Knox, Hugh Pope, and Evelyn Waugh. Known for his own translation of St. Augustine’s Confessions, Sheed was awarded an honorary doctorate in Divinity by Lille Catholic University in 1956. In this essay, he makes a profoundly convincing case for an authentically Catholic education.
