AMERICA/GUATEMALA – Appointment of the new Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Vatican City – On October 15, 2025, Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization , appointed Father Esequel Xicay Martin, of the clergy of Sololà-Chimaltenango, as National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies of Guatemala for the five-year term 2025-2030. The new director of the PMS in Guatemala was born in 1984 and was ordained a priest in 2009. He studied at the Saint John Paul II College , then continued at the Minor Seminary in San José and at the Major Seminary “Nostra Signora del Camino” in Sololà , and completed his fourth year of theology at the Major Seminary of the Assumption in 2008. Father Esequel Xicay Martin obtained a licentiate in pastoral theology from the University of Salamanca in Madrid and a licentiate in catechesis in Rome. The new director of the PMS in Guatemala served as vicar in the parish of Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Xecoxol and also collaborated with the parishes of San Martin de Tours in San Martin Jilotepeque and San Juan de la Cruz in Guatemala City, and finally with the Co-Cathedral of Sant’Anna in Chimaltenango. He also served as pastoral counselor during the year 2023 and from 2024 to 2025 he served as diocesan director of the PMS.
