AFRICA/SUDAN – Humanitarian Crisis: Millions displaced without food, drinking water, sanitation, and shelter

El Fasher – With the intensification of fighting that led to the Rapid Support Forces taking control of El Fasher and the withdrawal of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Joint Operations Command, numerous displaced people have poured north toward Qarni. The local press reports that hundreds of families have sought refuge there. In Qarni, a new chapter began for thousands of displaced people after more than 500 days of famine, violence, and mass killings. However, the population is urgently requesting food and medical supplies, especially given the approaching winter and the increasing number of new arrivals from El Fasher, the surrounding areas, Kutum, and other regions in northern Darfur.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Research in International Assistance has sent aid convoys to transport food. The agency stated that it has intensified its humanitarian efforts to meet the needs of both residents and displaced persons in the region. IRIA also noted that the need for humanitarian assistance in the region is immense and requires urgent action from humanitarian organizations. The entire area is currently suffering from a lack of drinking water, sanitation, and shelter. Despite the continuing critical humanitarian situation, displaced persons remain hopeful of returning home. Caritas Italy has joined Pope Leo’s appeal to the warring parties and the international community during the Angelus prayer of November 2 , calling for urgent intervention by the international community to end these atrocities and the humanitarian catastrophe that has been ongoing in Sudan for more than two years and is now the most severe in the world. At least 150,000 people have died, over 30 million people need assistance, more than 13 million have fled the war, 24 million suffer from severe food insecurity, 90% of children have no access to education, and two out of three Sudanese lack access to healthcare.
