AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN – South Sudan Council of Churches appeals to Kenyan President for efforts to achieve peace in South Sudan

Nairobi – “South Sudan is at a delicate and challenging stage,” members of the South Sudan Council of Churches , which unites the main Christian denominations in South Sudan, including the Catholic Church, appealed to Kenyan President William Ruto during a meeting with the Kenyan leader on November 18.
After reiterating Kenya’s role in the peace negotiations in South Sudan, the SSCC delegation, which included the Archbishop of Juba, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, warned that “the deteriorating security situation threatens to undo the fragile results of the peace agreement signed in 2018.”
The religious leaders specifically recalled the recent clashes in the states of Upper Nile, Jonglei, and Equatoria. “These clashes,” they stated, “have displaced thousands and once again fueled mistrust and retaliation between local communities.” The South Sudanese Council of Churches has asked the Kenyan president to continue his efforts to bring South Sudanese President Kiir Salva Kiir Mayardit and former Vice President Riek Machar to the negotiating table to resolve the conflict.
Kenyan President Ruto responded that “Kenya is committed to supporting all regional efforts to promote peace, stability, and democratic governance. We remain firmly convinced that a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan is essential to the progress of our region, and we will continue to work with our partners to promote dialogue, nation-building, and long-term stability.”
