Vatican City – The Holy Father, Leo XIV, has appointed the Most Reverend Father Simon Almeida, of the clergy of the same diocese, as Bishop of the Diocese of Poona and former Assistant Secretary of the Western Region Bishop’s Council.
Simon Almeida was born on November 4, 1960, in Ghas, now the Diocese of Vasai. After studying Philosophy and Theology at St. Pius X College in Mumbai, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Bombay, as well as a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Manila University in Quezon City .
He was ordained a priest on April 1, 1990, for the Diocese of Poona.
He has held the following positions: Assistant Parish Priest of St. Patrick Cathedral in Poona ; Assistant Parish Priest of St. Ignatius in Kirkee ; Diocesan Youth Director ; Rector of the Minor Seminary ; Parish Priest of St. Patrick Cathedral in Poona ; Member of the Presbyteral Council ; Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier’s in Chinchwad ; Member of the Board of Consultors ; Treasurer of the Diocese of Poona ; Parish Priest of St. Anne’s in Solapur Bazaar ; Parish Priest of St. John Paul II in Wakad .
Until now, he has served as Assistant Secretary of the Western Region Bishop’s Council.
