In a prominent front-page article in its October 28 edition, the Vatican newspaper warned that the planet is “drawing ever closer to a critical tipping point.”
Citing a new report from the World Meteorological Association, staff journalist Francesco Citterich wrote that the “accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continues to accelerate global warming, fueling a climate crisis whose consequences threaten to shape the fate of future generations.”
“This emergency is no longer just a matter for the future; it is already altering environmental balances and putting ecosystems and communities at risk across the globe,” added Citterich, who concluded:
The decisions made today regarding energy, the protection of ecosystems, and climate policies will help determine the scale of the changes that future generations will have to face.
Reducing emissions cannot immediately undo the warming that has already occurred, but it remains a fundamental tool for limiting its extent and containing consequences that are set to persist for centuries to come.
