Padraic Colum (1881-1972) was born in Ireland but lived much of his life in the United States. Married to the literary critic Mary (Maguire) Colum, Padraic joined James Stephens and Thomas MacDonagh in founding the Irish Review. Along with W. B. Yeats and Isabella Augusta (Lady Gregory), he also established the Irish National Theater. His stories, dramas and poems deal mostly with Irish legend, and his essays with Irish life and literary criticism, though he was also commissioned to create a collection of his versions of Hawaiian folklore for children. Padraic and his wife also collaborated in writing a memoir of their friend and fellow-Catholic James Joyce. [For more of these Catholic essays, see the Table of Contents.]
