ASIA/CHINA – Diocese of Fuzhou: Bishops Cai and Lin celebrate diaconal ordination together

Beijing – Bishop Joseph Cai Bingrui of Fuzhou and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Lin Yuntuan jointly celebrated a Mass during which Peter Ni Pengyu received diaconal ordination. The Mass was celebrated on November 18, the feast day of the dedication of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Roman Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, in Fuzhou Cathedral. Approximately 70 priests participated in the solemn Eucharistic celebration, which was also attended by all the religious sisters serving in the diocese, as well as many lay people and the family members of the new deacon.
The diaconal ordination was a joyful moment for the entire diocese, and was of great significance, especially considering the turmoil that has marked the history of the Diocese of Fuzhou in recent decades.
Peter Ni was born on August 5, 1996, and graduated from the national Seminary in Beijing in June 2025.
Joseph Lin Yuntuan was installed as Auxiliary Bishop on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, having been appointed to the office by Pope Leo XIV on June 5 as part of the dialogue on the implementation of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China on the appointment of Chinese Bishops. At the same time, he received civil recognition upon taking possession of the office. Joseph Lin was born on March 12, 1952, in Fuqing, Fujian Province. From 1979 to 1983, he attended the Fuzhou Diocesan Seminary. He was ordained a priest on April 9, 1984. From 1984 to 1994 and again from 1996 to 2002, he served as a parish priest in various parishes within the diocese. In 1985, he also taught at the diocesan seminary. From 1994 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2003, he was deputy director of the diocesan commission for economic affairs. Simultaneously, he served for several years as the bishop’s delegate. From 2003 to 2007, he held the office of diocesan administrator, and subsequently, until 2013, he assisted the Apostolic Administrator of the district as his delegate. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Apostolic Administrator “ad nutum Sanctae Sedis.” On December 28, 2017, he was consecrated a bishop.
Joseph Cai Bingrui was appointed Bishop of Fuzhou on January 15, 2025, by Pope Leo XIV, who had approved his candidacy under the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China and transferred him from the Diocese of Xiamen.
Bishop Cai celebrated the canonical possession of the diocese on January 23, 2025. Joseph Cai was born into a Catholic family on September 15, 1966. From 1985 to 1992, he studied philosophy and theology at Sheshan Seminary in Shanghai. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1992. In 1993, he was designated Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Xiamen. On November 19, 2007, he was appointed Bishop of the same diocese. Meanwhile, the Feast of Christ the King was solemnly celebrated yesterday in all Chinese dioceses.
