AMERICA/HAITI – Attack on the Foyer Saint Camille: “Continuing to run a hospital in this reality is heroic”

Port-au-Prince – On Tuesday, October 28, and Saturday, November 15, members of one of the armed gangs active in the area stormed the “Foyer Saint Camille” in Port-au-Prince.

In a statement sent to Fides by the organization Madian Orizzonti Onlus, an association that operates in Italy and in Camillian missions abroad, Father Antonio Menegon writes that the assailants entered all the wards, shouting and brandishing their weapons, terrorizing the patients who fled with IV drips and the children of the Foyer Bethléem.

The intervention of Father Erwan, a Camillian missionary in the capital, was crucial. In both incidents, he managed to restore calm and reason with the bandits, who abandoned their attempt and left.

“Continuing to run a hospital in this reality and under these conditions is not only difficult, but heroic,” Menegon concludes.
