Beijing – In a synodal church, one can not only “walk together,” but also “run a marathon together.” This was demonstrated by the first edition of “Pegaso,” the “Synodal Half Marathon,” in which Catholic priests from Beijing participated. This unique sporting initiative took place this Saturday .
The race was sponsored by Bishop Joseph Li Shan and organized by Auxiliary Bishop Matthew Zhen Xuebin . It was intended to raise awareness among all priests in Beijing about the importance of maintaining mental and physical health so that they can devote themselves energetically to their priestly ministry to the glory of God.
The race was also used as an opportunity to strengthen mutual trust and communion among members of the Catholic clergy in Beijing.
About thirty priests covered the entire 21-kilometer route along the banks of the Wenyu River, Beijing’s most important river, which flows through the Shunyi District. Inspired by the principles of “participating according to one’s abilities,” “recognizing the importance of health,” and “valuing participation” over competition, the participants nevertheless took the race seriously . According to the official report of the Diocese of Beijing, the first edition of the “half marathon” took place at the end of a five-day spiritual retreat that began on October 20 and was dedicated to the theme “Observing the Precepts and Cultivating Inner Growth.” The recent instructions from the political authorities to the various religious communities also remind us of the urgency of “observing the precepts,” “cultivating the inner life,” and “promoting integrity.”
During the retreat, Joseph Li Shan emphasized that all priests are called to acquire a solid awareness of the laws governing coexistence, observance of norms, and fidelity to their priestly vocation, which is expressed in strict adherence to the precepts, beliefs, and codes of conduct.
Coadjutor Bishop Matthew Zhen Xuebing also emphasized the urgency of being frugal, avoiding waste, and remaining faithful to the great discipline of the Catholic Church, while Father Joseph Wu Qinjing offered reflections on the theme “Be holy.” Citing the Word of God, he emphasized that those who belong to the clergy are called, in the authenticity of the faith, to preserve their original aspirations, affirm their priestly identity, and renew their pastoral zeal. With a holy life, he said, one serves the flock more effectively and bears witness to Christ.
