Meanwhile, a tax collector beats his breast and bows his head, praying only, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” We know the rest of the story: This Pharisee is like the Pharisees who rejected Jesus, and this publican is like the tax collectors and sinners who became his disciples.
