AMERICA/MEXICO – Missing priest found dead: murder investigation underway

Mexico City – The body of Father Bertoldo Pantaleón Estrada, the priest reported missing on Saturday, October 4, in Cocula, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, has been found. The body of the priest, who was parish priest of San Cristóbal de Mezcala in the Diocese of Chilpancingo-Chilapa, was found this Monday at around 2 p.m. on a dirt road between the towns of Zumpango and Mezcala, near kilometer 199 of the Mexico-Acapulco federal highway. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into aggravated murder.
In a statement issued by the Episcopal Conference, the bishops of Mexico expressed their sadness at the discovery of Father Bertoldo Pantaleón Estrada. “We note with sadness and pain that violent acts have once again plunged our community into mourning,” they stated. “Therefore, we call on the competent state and federal authorities to conduct a timely, thorough, and transparent investigation that will shed light on this crime and ensure the just punishment of those responsible.”
“Trusting in the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we pray that Christ, the Good Shepherd, welcomes our brother into his kingdom and grants him the promised eternal joy,” the bishops’ statement concludes. “The Society of Jesus in Mexico is deeply saddened and shocked by the discovery of Father Bertoldo Pantaleón Estrada, parish priest of San Cristóbal, Mezcala, Guerrero. We demand that the circumstances be clarified and that justice be done so that truth and peace may prevail,” the Jesuits also stated in a message posted on their X account.
