AMERICA – Beginning of the journey in view of the Ecclesial Assembly next November

Bogotà – The Latin American churches are starting to prepare for the first ecclesiastical assembly of Latin America and the Caribbean, which is to take place from November 21 to 28 in the Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico . “It is the first time that such a church meeting takes place. It is not a conference of Latin American bishops like the previous one, most recently in Aparecida. It is an encounter of God’s people: lay people, religious, priests, bishops, the whole pilgrim people of God. We pray, we talk, we think, we discuss, we seek the will of God”, Pope Francis said in the video message of January 24 on the occasion of the presentation of the assembly.
Now the Latin American Bishops’ Council has published the first accompanying working materials in order to “promote the participation of the people of God, who live their faith in the various realities on the continent and to accompany the journey of the Church in view of the Ecclesial Assembly”. The work aids that have now been published are the first in a series to be published every two months from now on and are intended for work in February and March.
This time the focus is on “The identity of the missionary disciples” under the motto “Disciples for the Kingdom”. “The proposal consists in following the path as missionary disciples in a community with equal rights – as written in the introduction – together and in synodality. In this perspective the reality and identity of the missionary disciples should be made known according to the Document of Aparecida”, it says in the cover letter.
