ABOUT THE FILM

Having devoted his life to helping the less fortunate, Fr. Rene Robert was regarded as a “living saint” in the tight-knit community of St. Augustine, Florida.

But when Fr. Rene began helping ex-convicts after they’d been released from prison, the people closest to him worried that he was putting his life at risk—especially the local sheriff, David Shoar, one of Fr. Rene’s longtime friends.

So, in April, 2016, when Fr. Rene failed to show up at a church service, Sheriff Shoar immediately put his best detectives on the case and local residents began searching for the beloved priest. It quickly became apparent, however, that Fr. Rene was not just missing—someone had taken him against his will.

True crime documentary WHERE THERE IS DARKNESS follows the nationwide manhunt for Fr. Rene amid a series of shocking revelations and the discovery of a 20-year-old letter in which Fr. Rene seemed to foretell his own fate.

It’s time for the world to know Fr. Rene…

An appeal from our friends at Stella Mar Films

This award-winning film changes lives, and right now is the perfect time to make it available for everyone. We plan to release it on-demand by April 30!

We’re reaching out now to ask for your help; as a sign of our gratitude, you’ll get to see the film before anyone else does.

Why now? So far, our true-crime, faith-based docudrama has only been seen in cinema screenings and film festivals. It’s won more than 45 awards, including a prestigious Gabriel Award presented by the Catholic Press Association!

Riding on this success, Where There Is Darkness had just opened for its first box office run when the coronavirus pandemic erupted…

Suddenly, movie theaters around the world were closing… We wondered if we should just wait until theaters opened again.

But as we thought about all the intense, beautiful responses we’d gotten from audiences, we realized that this movie is too important to hold back any longer.

And despite the circumstances—or perhaps because of them—Fr. Rene’s message of mercy and God’s love is exactly what people need right now.

Our decision to release the film now digitally is an act of faith. We don’t have the budget, but our crowdfunding campaign allows people who follow our work to help with even a small contribution—and we’re blessed to have so many of you.

Donating $25 to our crowdfunding campaign is all it takes to reserve your digital ticket to watch the film online during our April 30 premiere. Gifts for larger donations include DVDs, T-Shirts, credit in the film, and more.

We know that time is of the essence, so we’re aiming for a fast-track. If we can reach our goal, we’ll be able to release Where There Is Darkness within 10 days of the end of our short 15-day campaign!

With your help, the movie can be made available throughout the world via the Internet and digital home streaming platforms, including:

  • Amazon Prime
  • iTunes
  • GooglePlay/Youtube
Plus, it will be made available on DVD/Blu-Ray for those who prefer to own it.

It will also feature closed-captions for the hearing impaired, and multiple languages options including Espanol!

Again, though, we can’t do this without your help to cover the costs associated with streaming the film, and a little extra to promote it in a big enough way that it “catches fire” and gets seen by as many people as possible.

So, if you believe in the work we do at Stella Mar Films and you want to see Fr. Rene’s story in the world, please donate and claim some of the free gifts today!

SPECIAL REPORT:

Catholic Saints Coronavirus

As the world grapples with an unfolding pandemic, people of faith are turning to prayer. See our favorite devotions, prayers, patron saints, and devotional items for these difficult times.

St. Edmund the Martyr

St. Edmund was the king of East Anglia from about 855 until his death in 869.

He is known as the patron saint of protection against pandemics, the plague, and sickness. People around the world are now calling on St. Edmund’s intercession against the coronavirus pandemic.

Like St. Roch, St. Edmund became associated with pandemics after his death, when his intercession was believed to have saved people from the plague.

Join us in reciting the prayer below, and see our St. Edmund Patron Saint Against Pandemics Holy Card.

Prayer of St Edmund the Martyr

Into Thy hands, O Lord, and into the hands of Thy holy Angels, I commit and entrust this day my soul, my relations, my benefactors, my friends and enemies, and all Thy Catholic people.

Keep us, O Lord, through the day, by the merits and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all Thy Saints, from all vicious and unruly desires, from all sins and temptations of the devil, and from sudden and unprovided death and the pains of hell.

Illuminate my heart with the grace of Thy Holy Spirit; grant that I may ever be obedient to Thy commandments; suffer me not to be separated from Thee, O God, who livest and reignest with God the Father and the same Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING NEWS

Pope Francis’ Blessing for the World

Yesterday’s Urbi et Orbi blessing amid the Coronavirus pandemic was made all the more striking as Pope Francis walked alone through the empty square of St. Peter’s.

In his prayer, he said, “You are calling on us to seize this time of trial as a time of choosing. It is not the time of your judgement, but of our judgement: a time to choose what matters and what passes away, a time to separate what is necessary from what is not. It is a time to get our lives back on track with regard to you, Lord, and to others.”

Pope Francis also said, “We have realized that we are in the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and needed, all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other.” READ MORE

St. Corona the Martyr

Saint Corona, who lived in 2nd century Syria, was only 15 when she professed her Christian Faith and was martyred by the Romans.

Corona was reportedly tied by her feet to the tops of two palm trees, which were then bent to the ground and released, killing her instantly.

Saint Corona has reportedly been venerated as a patron saint against epidemics and pandemics in Austria and Bavaria , and she is known in the Church as the patron saint of treasure hunters.

Corona’s feast day is May 14. Her remains are housed in a church in northern Italy, the same part of Europe that became an epicenter of the Coronavirus outbreak. We invite you to join us in prayer for Corona’s intercession.

The following prayer, said by Pope Francis as he prayed in Italy, is featured on the back of our St. Corona Prayer Card:

Pope Francis’ Coronavirus Prayer

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

NOTE: While these items are not meant to stave off sickness, we present them as reminders to pray for divine intercession and have faith in the promises of the Church. See the Coronavirus Protection category in our online store.

St. Roch

According to Catholic tradition, St. Roch was miraculously born with a red cross on his breast. He grew up to be a man of great faith. After his parents died, Saint Roch gave away his inheritence to the poor.

In the year 1315, he miraculously cured plague victims in Italy with the sign of the cross, but his ministry led to him contracting the disease himself. He later recovered but spent the remainder of his life in prison after being mistaken for a spy.

After St. Roch died in prison, an angel appeared in his cell and said that those who invoked Roch’s intercession would be cured. Today, St. Roch is called upon to intercede against illness, including the coronavirus pandemic.

The prayer to St. Roch is featured on the back of our St. Roch Holy Card:

Prayer to St. Roch

O Blessed Saint Roch, Patron of the Sick, have pity on those who lie upon a bed of suffering.

Your power was so great when you were in this world, that by the sign of the Cross, many were healed of their diseases.

Now that you are in heaven, your power is not less. Offer, then, to God our sighs and tears and obtain for us that health we seek. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Repeat the following 3 times: Saint Roch, pray for us, that we may be preserved from all diseases of body and soul.
